The Great Halloween Debate

Everyone loves candy. But sweet or sour? Chocolate or gummies? And finally, candy corn or not?

The most popular candies in the US are Reese’s cups, skittles, and M&Ms. The agreed-upon worst candies are circus peanuts, candy corn, and peanut butter kisses. Circus peanuts and peanut butter kisses seem obvious. But candy corn is a little more divisive.

Candy corn, with its distinct yellow, orange, and white coloring, was originally named “chicken feed” when it was invented in the 1880s because corn was considered more of an animal food. It soon became a sweet staple, much like gum is for us, and its name changed to what we all know it as today: candy corn. While it was originally a year-round treat, in the 1950s candy corn advertising became more focused in October, which is why it is now a fall candy, and more specifically, one enjoyed on Halloween.

Regardless of its earlier popularity, candy corn now evokes one of two responses in those who eat it: hate or love. But why do people have such strong feelings surrounding it?

Candy corn has a distinct waxy and sweet taste that can’t be found in any other candy. For some, the overpowering sweetness of the candy is too much to handle, while for others, it is a comforting taste that evokes the memory of Halloween and fall-related nostalgia.

Let’s look at the opinions of some Cooper students. Senior Mobis Bassir says she strongly dislikes candy corn because “it’s gross”. But on the other hand, junior Katelyn Eveland loves candy corn- “something about the taste and texture” just makes it irresistible.

As you can see, the question of candy corn has no easy answer. But luckily, it’s not the only candy option. So regardless of our differences of opinion on candy corn, we can put them aside to enjoy Halloween together every year. Whatever candy you love, we hope you enjoyed lots of it this Halloween!
