Self-Care Through Clubs

With a student-teacher body so diverse, it’s no surprise that Cooper’s clubs reflect the creativity and ambition of the community. From SDC, which provides a safe place for students to discuss diversity; to Interact, which fosters Integrity and leadership, Cooper’s clubs range over many subjects and interests. Clubs like Science Bowl, TED-Ed , and Robotics (just to name a few) often combine multiple subjects and foster creativity and inventiveness.

On a different note, it’s no secret that school can get stressful sometimes. Following wellness week, there’s many valuable lessons to be learned about how we can manage our stress levels and practice self-care. Clubs can be a great way to relieve stress. For example, Off The Hook (held on Day 5s in Room 112), Cooper’s knitting and crochet club, provides a safe space for students to converse and grow their skills of knitting and crocheting, no matter what skill level. Knitting and crocheting, and its meditative process, as well as cool benefits such as clothing and accessories, can be a great outlet for stress.

As we all continue to improve our healthy habits even after wellness week, finding an outlet can help someone relax, or feel at ease even in times of stress. It is scientifically proven that hobbies and activities can improve mental health and lower stress levels (Headtohealth.gov). Cooper’s clubs offer many different safe spaces and outlets for everyone to grow in an activity and continue to get closer to their best self. Building a passion can even make someone feel happier and improve overall mood. Whether you enjoy science, debate, or want to learn a new craft, there are great options for everyone.
